Because of the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade today, I thought I would share a poem I recently wrote. I had just stumbled upon the Abort73.com website and read the free e-book, Love the Least (A Lot). (I highly recommend the book and the website). Both were convicting and inspiring because even as a long time “pro-lifer”, I had stopped thinking about (and worse I had stopped praying about) something so very important, life itself.
We Have No Choice
It shouldn’t be my choice to choose,
Another person’s life’s not mine to lose.
The safest place to live should be inside the mother’s womb;
We shouldn’t have the choice to become a temporary tomb.
We’ve been lied to far too long;
The issue is not just tissue, they couldn’t be more wrong.
With the science of today,
We know about heartbeats and brain waves and fingerprints and even DNA.
It shouldn’t be my choice to choose,
Another person’s life’s not mine to lose.
It’s been 40 long years and more.
Far too many lives destroyed and we have an open sore.
Right now our country’s soul is crying,
So Let’s work together to stop more innocents from dying.
The burden on our conscience is just too much to bear;
For us to have to choose another’s fate simply is not fair.
Who are we to think we are like the Almighty God, our Maker?
We are not the ones who created life, so we shouldn’t try to be the taker.
It shouldn’t be my choice to choose,
Another person’s life’s not mine to lose.
It’s inside each of us you know, the inherent will to live.
And deep down we all know that death should not be our choice to give.
Back then, maybe the truth we didn’t fully know,
But now even convinced for life is a courageous woman known as Roe.
Life is God’s precious gift from up above.
So let’s move forward and choose restoration and forgiveness and healing and love.
Lets give the least among us at least a fighting chance:
The chance to simply be and grow and thrive and dream and dance.
Envision our country where people are valued just as they should be.
No matter their age or color or gender or any differences we can see.
We simply have no choice.
We must speak loudly for those who don’t yet have a voice.
It shouldn’t be my choice to choose,Another person’s life’s not mine to lose.
